What it means

What are reconditioned engines?

A reconditioned engine, often called a recon engine, has been taken apart, cleaned and inspected. Worn parts are replaced and the engine is rebuilt so it is ready to go back into service. It is different from a used engine, which is fitted in the condition it came out of another car.

Reconditioning is closely related to an engine rebuild. The difference is whose engine it is: in a rebuild we restore your own engine, while with a reconditioned engine we supply a prepared unit and fit it in place of yours.

Inside the work

How reconditioned engines are prepared

Every engine is different, so the exact work depends on what the inspection finds. Reconditioning commonly covers:

  • stripping the engine and cleaning the components
  • inspecting the block, crankshaft, cylinder head and bearings
  • replacing worn parts such as gaskets, seals, bearings and timing components
  • rebuilding and checking the engine before it is fitted

We explain what the engine for your car involves when we quote.

Supply and fit

Reconditioned engines with supply and fit

We handle the whole job as an engine replacement supply and fit. We match the reconditioned engine to your registration and engine code, remove your failed engine, fit the reconditioned unit, move across the parts that need transferring and check everything before you collect the car.

The work is done at our partner workshop in Rainham, East London, or our partner workshop in Peterborough. You are welcome to visit Rainham; call ahead so we can arrange it.

Choosing

Reconditioned, rebuilt or used?

If your own engine can be saved, a rebuild keeps the original unit. If it cannot, reconditioned engines are the usual choice for drivers who plan to keep the car. A used engine can suit some situations. We set out the options with a free quote, so you can choose with the facts in front of you.

Our specialist focus is reconditioned engines for Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar, and we also supply them for BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Ford, Peugeot and Citroen, with priority on 2015 and newer cars.

Looking after it

Running in and looking after a reconditioned engine

A reconditioned engine needs the same care as any engine, and a little more at the start.

  • Follow the running-in advice we give you when you collect the car.
  • Keep to the oil and service schedule, and use the oil grade specified for your engine.
  • Check the oil and coolant levels regularly, especially in the first few weeks.
  • Do not ignore warning lights. Call us if anything changes.

Looking after the engine also protects your warranty, which runs for 6 months with unlimited miles, or 12 months or 12,000 miles.

Why engines fail

Fixing the cause, not just the engine

An engine rarely fails for no reason. Overheating, oil starvation, a failed timing chain or a blocked oil cooler can all destroy an engine, and the same fault can damage a reconditioned engine too if it is not put right. Before fitting, we look at why the original engine failed and check the related parts, so the new engine starts with a clean slate.

For example, if a 2.0 Ingenium diesel failed after its timing chain stretched, we look at the oil level and condition, because fuel-diluted oil is a known contributor. If a 3.0 V6 diesel failed with a spun bearing, we check the oil cooler and oil feed before the reconditioned engine goes in. These checks are part of doing the job properly, and we explain anything we find before we go ahead.
