Jaguar engine rebuild
Why rebuild a Jaguar engine?
Many of the Jaguars we see are 2015 or newer saloons and SUVs with plenty of life left in them, apart from the engine. An engine rebuild restores your original engine, while a reconditioned engine or used engine replaces it. We help you decide which makes sense for the car and how long you plan to keep it.
The most common reason Jaguar owners contact us is a timing chain problem on the 2.0 diesel in the XE, XF and F-Pace. Caught early, it can be a timing chain replacement. Left too long, it can need a full rebuild.
Jaguar is part of our specialist focus, alongside Land Rover and Range Rover.

Models
Jaguar models we work on
- XF. The 2.2 and 3.0 diesels on the earlier car (X250), and the 2.0 Ingenium diesel and petrol on the later car (X260), plus the 3.0 V6 diesel.
- XE. Mostly the 2.0 Ingenium diesel and petrol. Timing chain stretch is the main concern.
- F-Pace. 2.0 Ingenium, the 3.0 V6 diesel, the 3.0 supercharged V6 and the 5.0 V8 in the SVR.
- E-Pace. 2.0 Ingenium diesel and petrol.
- XJ. Mostly the 3.0 V6 diesel, plus the supercharged V6 and V8 petrols.
Jaguar F-Pace engine replacement
If your F-Pace engine has failed, Engine Rebuild can assess whether it can be rebuilt or whether a replacement engine is the better option. Send your registration so we can confirm the engine code and discuss reconditioned or used options.
We also work on the F-Type. Send your registration and we will confirm the engine code.

Common engines
Jaguar engines and known problems
2.0 Ingenium diesel (AJ200D)
Fitted to the XE, XF, F-Pace and E-Pace, badged 20d. It is best known for timing chain stretch. The chain sits at the gearbox end of the engine, so replacing it is a bigger job than on many engines and often means the engine has to come out. Short journeys and repeated DPF regenerations can also dilute the oil with fuel, which speeds up wear.
2.0 Ingenium petrol (AJ200P)
Fitted to the XE, XF, F-Pace, E-Pace and four-cylinder F-Type. It shares the chain-driven layout of the diesel, so a cold-start rattle or timing fault code should be checked.
3.0 V6 diesel (AJ-V6D, 306DT)
Fitted to the XF 3.0d, XJ and F-Pace 30d. Known for crankshaft and main bearing failure, where a bearing spins or the crank breaks, usually leaving the engine beyond simple repair. Turbo faults and oil and coolant leaks are also reported. A knock or low oil pressure warning means stop driving.
3.0 V6 and 5.0 V8 supercharged petrol
Fitted to the F-Type, F-Pace, XF, XE S and XJ. Water pump and coolant pipe leaks, timing chain tensioner wear on earlier V8s and a rattle from the supercharger drive are the faults we hear about most.
2.2 diesel (224DT)
Fitted to the XF 2.2d from about 2011 to 2015. It uses a cam belt, so a missed belt change can lead to valve and piston damage.

Symptoms
Signs your Jaguar engine needs help
Most Jaguar engine failures give a warning first. Acting early keeps more options open.
- Knocking or rumbling from the bottom of the engine often a bearing problem. Stop driving and call us, because running it can turn a rebuild into a replacement.
- Rattle on a cold start for a few seconds after starting is a classic sign of a stretched timing chain.
- Oil pressure warning or low oil level check the level straight away and do not keep driving with the warning on.
- Overheating or losing coolant with no obvious leak can point to a water pump, pipe or head gasket fault.
- Heavy smoke, loss of power or limp mode can come from the turbo, injectors or internal wear. A fault code read and an inspection tell us which.
- Oil level rising on the dipstick on a diesel usually means fuel is getting into the oil from repeated DPF regenerations.
Send the symptoms and any warning lights with your registration and we will tell you what we think is going on.

Rebuild, repair or replace
Choosing the right fix for your Jaguar
There are three routes, and an inspection tells us which one is right.
- Engine repair. For turbo, injector, leak and cooling faults that do not need the engine stripped.
- Engine rebuild. Your engine is stripped, inspected and rebuilt with worn or damaged parts replaced.
- Engine replacement. A reconditioned engine or used engine is supplied and fitted when the original cannot be saved.
We do not quote figures until we know the car and what has failed, so the quote matches the job.
