Citroen engine rebuild
Why rebuild a Citroen engine?
When a Citroen engine fails, the rest of the car or van is usually still worth keeping, whether it is a family C5 Aircross or a Berlingo or Relay that earns its keep every day. An engine rebuild or a replacement engine is normally better value than selling it as a non-runner.
A rebuild keeps your original engine. We strip it, find out why it failed, replace the worn or damaged parts and put it back together. If the block or crankshaft is beyond saving, a reconditioned engine or a used engine may be the better route, and we explain the difference before any work starts.
Our specialist focus is Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar. We also rebuild, repair and replace Citroen engines, with priority on 2015 and newer vehicles, and we are happy to look at older ones and every other make.

Models
Citroen models we work on
- C3 and C3 Aircross. Mostly the 1.2 PureTech petrol, plus the 1.5 and 1.6 BlueHDi diesels.
- C4, C4 Picasso and Grand C4 SpaceTourer. The 1.2 PureTech petrols and the 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 diesels.
- C5 Aircross. From 2019 with the 1.2 PureTech, 1.5 BlueHDi and 2.0 BlueHDi.
- Berlingo, Dispatch and Relay. The Berlingo and Dispatch use 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 diesels, and the Relay uses 2.0 and 2.2 diesels. We also look at DS models, which share many of these engines.
Not sure which engine you have? Send your registration and we will confirm the engine code for you.

Common engines
Citroen engines and known problems
1.2 PureTech petrol
Citroen fits the three-cylinder 1.2 PureTech to the C3, C3 Aircross, C4, C5 Aircross and Berlingo. Its cam belt runs inside the engine, in the oil. With age the belt material can soften and break up, and debris can collect in the oil pick-up and sump. The result can be a low oil pressure warning and, if the car keeps running, serious engine damage. Heavy oil use is another reported fault, so check the dipstick regularly. Caught early, the belt is a timing chain or wet belt replacement.
1.6 HDi and BlueHDi diesel
Found in the C3, C4, Berlingo and Dispatch. Look out for a ticking or puffing noise and black carbon around an injector, which usually means a failed injector seal. Turbo failures on this engine are often linked to the oil supply, so when a turbo goes the oil feed needs checking too, or the new one can fail as well. The timing belt also needs changing on time.
1.5 BlueHDi diesel
Fitted from about 2017 to the C3, C4, C5 Aircross, Berlingo and Dispatch. AdBlue system faults are widely reported on BlueHDi diesels: a heater, pump or sensor fault brings up a countdown warning, and the car may not restart when it reaches zero.
2.0 BlueHDi and the Relay diesels
The 2.0 BlueHDi is fitted to the C5 Aircross, Dispatch and larger MPVs, and the Relay uses 2.0 and 2.2 diesels. Hard-working vans are worth checking for DPF, EGR and injector faults and for turbo wear. Regular oil changes matter on vans that idle a lot or do short runs.

Symptoms
Signs your Citroen engine needs help
Most engine failures give a warning first. These are the signs Citroen owners tell us about most often.
- Knocking or rumbling from the bottom of the engine often a bearing problem. Stop driving and call us, because running it can turn a rebuild into a replacement.
- Oil pressure light or the oil level dropping fast on a 1.2 PureTech can mean belt debris in the oil or heavy oil use. Do not keep driving with the light on.
- Ticking or puffing from the top of the engine on an HDi diesel often means a leaking injector seal.
- Overheating or losing coolant with no obvious leak can point to a water pump, pipe or head gasket fault.
- AdBlue countdown warning on a BlueHDi should be looked at before it reaches zero, because the engine may not restart.
- Heavy smoke, loss of power or limp mode can come from the turbo, injectors, DPF, EGR or internal wear. A fault code read and an inspection tell us which.
If you are not sure, send the symptoms and any warning lights with your registration and we will tell you what we think is going on.

Rebuild, repair or replace
Choosing the right fix for your Citroen
There are three routes, and an inspection tells us which one makes sense.
- Engine repair. For faults that do not need the engine stripped, such as a leak, turbo, injector or cooling problem.
- Engine Rebuild. Your engine is stripped, inspected and rebuilt with worn or damaged parts replaced. A good choice when the block and crank can be saved.
- Engine replacement. A reconditioned engine or used engine is supplied and fitted when the original is beyond economic repair.
We do not quote figures until we know the vehicle and what has failed, so you get a clear quote for the job you actually need.
