Audi engine rebuild
Why rebuild a Audi engine?
When an Audi engine fails, the rest of the car is usually still worth keeping. The quattro drivetrain, gearbox, interior and bodywork tend to last, so an engine rebuild or a replacement engine is normally better value than selling the car as a non-runner.
A rebuild keeps your original engine. We strip it, find out why it failed, replace the worn or damaged parts and put it back together. If the block or crankshaft is beyond saving, a reconditioned engine or a used engine may be the better route, and we explain the difference before any work starts.
Our specialist focus is Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar. We also rebuild, repair and replace Audi engines, with priority on 2015 and newer vehicles, and we are happy to look at older ones and every other make.

Models
Audi models we work on
- A3 and Q2. Mostly the 1.0, 1.4 and 1.5 TFSI petrols and the 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels.
- A4 and A5. The 2.0 TDI is the most common, along with the 2.0 TFSI petrol and the 3.0 TDI V6.
- A6 and A7. Mainly the 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI diesels.
- Q3, Q5 and Q7. Mostly 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI diesels, plus the 2.0 TFSI petrol. We also look at the A1, TT and S models.
Not sure which engine you have? Send your registration and we will confirm the engine code for you.

Common engines
Audi engines and known problems
2.0 TFSI petrol (EA888)
Used across the A3, A4, A5, A6, Q3 and Q5, and in the S3 and TT. On earlier versions, from about 2008 to 2012, the best known problems are high oil use, often linked to the piston rings, and wear in the timing chain tensioner. A chain that jumps a tooth can bend valves, so a rattle on start-up should be checked quickly. Direct injection also lets carbon build up on the inlet valves over time. Later versions are worth checking for coolant leaks from the water pump and thermostat housing.
1.0, 1.4 and 1.5 TFSI petrol
Most of the smaller petrols in the A1, A3 and Q2 from about 2012 use a timing belt, so changing it on time matters. Earlier 1.4 TFSI engines used a chain, and chain noise on those should be checked. Send your registration and we will confirm which engine you have.
2.0 TDI diesel
The most common Audi diesel, found in almost every model from the A3 to the A6 and Q5. It uses a timing belt, so belt and water pump changes on time are important. On higher-mileage cars, DPF, EGR, injector and turbo faults are worth checking, especially on cars used for short trips.
3.0 TDI V6 diesel
Fitted to the A4, A5, A6, A7, Q5 and Q7. Its timing chains sit at the back of the engine, at the gearbox end, so chain work usually means taking the engine out. Chain or tensioner noise, oil leaks and DPF faults are worth checking early, before a small job becomes a big one. Caught early, chain wear is a timing chain or wet belt replacement.

Symptoms
Signs your Audi engine needs help
Most engine failures give a warning first. These are the signs Audi owners tell us about most often.
- Knocking or rumbling from the bottom of the engine often a bearing problem. Stop driving and call us, because running it can turn a rebuild into a replacement.
- Rattle on a cold start can point to a timing chain or tensioner problem, especially on earlier 2.0 TFSI and 3.0 TDI engines.
- Oil pressure warning or high oil use check the level straight away. Some 2.0 TFSI engines are known for using oil, and running low can damage the bearings.
- Overheating or losing coolant with no obvious leak can point to a water pump, thermostat housing, pipe or head gasket fault.
- Heavy smoke, loss of power or limp mode can come from the turbo, injectors, DPF, EGR or internal wear. A fault code read and an inspection tell us which.
- Repeated DPF warnings on a diesel often mean the car is not getting enough longer runs, or that a sensor or EGR fault needs attention.
If you are not sure, send the symptoms and any warning lights with your registration and we will tell you what we think is going on.

Rebuild, repair or replace
Choosing the right fix for your Audi
There are three routes, and an inspection tells us which one makes sense.
- Engine repair. For faults that do not need the engine stripped, such as a leak, turbo, injector or cooling problem.
- Engine Rebuild. Your engine is stripped, inspected and rebuilt with worn or damaged parts replaced. A good choice when the block and crank can be saved.
- Engine replacement. A reconditioned engine or used engine is supplied and fitted when the original is beyond economic repair.
We do not quote figures until we know the vehicle and what has failed, so you get a clear quote for the job you actually need.

FAQ
Audi engine rebuild questions
Do you rebuild Audi engines in London?
Yes. Audi engines are rebuilt, repaired and replaced at our partner workshop in Rainham, East London, and at our partner workshop in Peterborough. We cover London, Peterborough and about 100 miles around.
Why does my 2.0 TFSI use so much oil?
On earlier 2.0 TFSI engines, high oil use is often linked to piston ring wear. An inspection tells us how far it has gone and whether a rebuild makes sense.
Can a 3.0 TDI timing chain be replaced?
Yes. Because the chains are at the gearbox end, the engine usually has to come out. Caught early, it is a timing chain job. If a chain has failed, the engine may need a rebuild or replacement.
Is it worth rebuilding an A4 or Q5 engine?
Usually, if the rest of the car is sound. A rebuild or replacement engine is often better value than selling the car as a non-runner. We inspect first and explain the options.
