Mercedes engine rebuild
Why rebuild a Mercedes engine?
When a Mercedes engine fails, the rest of the car is usually still worth keeping. The gearbox, suspension, body and interior are often in good order, so an engine rebuild or a replacement engine is normally better value than selling the car as a non-runner.
A rebuild keeps your original engine. We strip it, find out why it failed, replace the worn or damaged parts and put it back together. If the block or crankshaft is beyond saving, a reconditioned engine or a used engine may be the better route, and we explain the difference before any work starts.
Our specialist focus is Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar. We also rebuild, repair and replace Mercedes engines, with priority on 2015 and newer vehicles, and we are happy to look at older ones and every other make.

Models
Mercedes models we work on
- A-Class and B-Class. Petrol engines and the 1.5, 1.8, 2.1 and later 2.0 diesels. Some A-Class and B-Class diesels use a 1.5 engine shared with Renault.
- C-Class and E-Class. The C220 and E220 diesels are the most common, with the 2.1 OM651 on earlier cars and the 2.0 OM654 on later ones. The 350 diesels use the 3.0 V6.
- GLC, GLE and ML. Mostly the 2.1, 2.0 and 3.0 diesels.
- Vito and Sprinter. We also look at Mercedes vans, which share many of these diesels.
Not sure which engine you have? Send your registration and we will confirm the engine code for you.

Common engines
Mercedes engines and known problems
2.1 OM651 diesel
Fitted to a wide range of Mercedes from about 2008 to 2018, including the C220, C250, E220, E250, GLK, GLC, Vito and Sprinter. Timing chain stretch is a known problem, and some early engines had injector faults. A rattle on start-up, rough running or a misfire should be checked before it gets worse. Caught early, chain wear is a timing chain or wet belt replacement.
2.0 OM654 diesel
The newer four-cylinder diesel, from about 2016 in the C220d, E220d and GLC 220d. It does not have a long list of well known faults. DPF and AdBlue system faults are worth checking on modern diesels like this one, so send the registration and the symptoms and we will advise.
3.0 OM642 V6 diesel
Used in the C350, E350, ML350, GLE and Sprinter. Oil leaking from the oil cooler seals into the V of the engine is a well known fault, and the inlet manifold swirl flaps and their actuator can also give trouble. The cooler sits under the inlet manifold, so it is a labour-heavy job and worth checking on any high-mileage engine.
Petrol engines
Older 1.8 M271 petrols are known for timing chain wear. On newer 1.6 and 2.0 petrols, a rattle at start-up is worth checking. For other petrol engines, send the registration and we will confirm the engine code and your options.

Symptoms
Signs your Mercedes engine needs help
Most engine failures give a warning first. These are the signs Mercedes owners tell us about most often.
- Knocking or rumbling from the bottom of the engine often a bearing problem. Stop driving and call us, because running it can turn a rebuild into a replacement.
- Rattle on a cold start for a few seconds after starting is a classic sign of a stretched timing chain, a known issue on the OM651 diesel and older M271 petrols.
- Oil pressure warning or low oil level check the level straight away and do not keep driving with the warning on.
- Oil leaks or a burning smell oil collecting on top of a V6 diesel can come from the oil cooler seals.
- Overheating or losing coolant with no obvious leak can point to a water pump, pipe or head gasket fault.
- Heavy smoke, loss of power or limp mode can come from the turbo, injectors, swirl flaps, DPF or internal wear. A fault code read and an inspection tell us which.
If you are not sure, send the symptoms and any warning lights with your registration and we will tell you what we think is going on.

Rebuild, repair or replace
Choosing the right fix for your Mercedes
There are three routes, and an inspection tells us which one makes sense.
- Engine repair. For faults that do not need the engine stripped, such as a leak, turbo, injector or cooling problem.
- Engine Rebuild. Your engine is stripped, inspected and rebuilt with worn or damaged parts replaced. A good choice when the block and crank can be saved.
- Engine replacement. A reconditioned engine or used engine is supplied and fitted when the original is beyond economic repair.
We do not quote figures until we know the vehicle and what has failed, so you get a clear quote for the job you actually need.
