Ford engine rebuild
Why rebuild a Ford engine?
When a Ford engine fails, the rest of the car or van is often still worth keeping. The gearbox, body and interior are usually in good order, so an engine rebuild or a replacement engine can be better value than selling it as a non-runner, and for a working van it gets you back on the road.
A rebuild keeps your original engine. We strip it, find out why it failed, replace the worn or damaged parts and put it back together. If the block or crankshaft is beyond saving, a reconditioned engine or a used engine may be the better route, and we explain the difference before any work starts.
Our specialist focus is Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar. We also rebuild, repair and replace Ford engines, with priority on 2015 and newer vehicles, and we are happy to look at older ones and every other make.

Models
Ford models we work on
- Fiesta and Puma. Mostly the 1.0 EcoBoost petrol, plus the 1.5 and 1.6 TDCi diesels on some Fiestas.
- Focus and C-Max. The 1.0 and 1.5 EcoBoost petrols, and the 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 diesels.
- Kuga and Mondeo. The 2.0 TDCi diesel is the most common, along with the 1.5 EcoBoost and the later 2.0 EcoBlue.
- Transit and Transit Custom. The 2.2 TDCi on earlier vans and the 2.0 EcoBlue from about 2016. We also work on the Transit Connect and Ranger. If you need a Ford Ranger engine rebuild, send your registration so we can confirm the engine code and assess whether a rebuild or replacement makes sense.
Not sure which engine you have? Send your registration and we will confirm the engine code for you.

Common engines
Ford engines and known problems
1.0 EcoBoost petrol
Fitted to the Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport, C-Max, B-Max and Puma from 2012. Its timing belt runs in oil, known as a wet belt. As it ages, the belt can break down and shed material that blocks the oil pick-up, which leads to low oil pressure and engine damage. Using the right oil and changing the belt on time both matter. Some earlier cars also had coolant leaks and overheating, so any loss of coolant should be checked straight away. A worn belt caught early is a timing chain or wet belt replacement.
1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost petrol
Used in the Focus, Kuga, Mondeo and Fiesta ST. Coolant loss on some of these engines can point to an internal leak, so a dropping coolant level with no visible leak needs an inspection. Later three-cylinder 1.5 EcoBoost engines also use a wet belt.
2.0 TDCi diesel
Found in the Focus, Mondeo, Kuga, S-Max and Galaxy. It uses a timing belt. On higher-mileage cars, DPF, EGR, injector and turbo faults are worth checking, especially on cars used for short trips.
2.2 TDCi and 2.0 EcoBlue diesel
The 2.2 TDCi powers earlier Transit and Transit Custom vans, and the 2.0 EcoBlue took over from about 2016 in the Transit range and later in the Kuga, Mondeo and Focus. Injector, turbo, DPF and AdBlue faults are worth checking. Vans that work hard or tow need their oil changed on time.

Symptoms
Signs your Ford engine needs help
Most engine failures give a warning first. These are the signs Ford owners tell us about most often.
- Knocking or rumbling from the bottom of the engine often a bearing problem. Stop driving and call us, because running it can turn a rebuild into a replacement.
- Low oil pressure warning on a 1.0 EcoBoost can be a sign of wet belt debris blocking the oil pick-up. Stop driving and have it checked.
- Overheating or losing coolant with no obvious leak can point to a water pump, pipe, head gasket or internal leak.
- Rough running or a misfire can come from ignition, injectors or internal wear, and should be checked before it causes more damage.
- Heavy smoke, loss of power or limp mode can come from the turbo, injectors, DPF, AdBlue system or internal wear. A fault code read and an inspection tell us which.
If you are not sure, send the symptoms and any warning lights with your registration and we will tell you what we think is going on.

Rebuild, repair or replace
Choosing the right fix for your Ford
There are three routes, and an inspection tells us which one makes sense.
- Engine repair. For faults that do not need the engine stripped, such as a leak, turbo, injector or cooling problem.
- Engine Rebuild. Your engine is stripped, inspected and rebuilt with worn or damaged parts replaced. A good choice when the block and crank can be saved.
- Engine replacement. A reconditioned engine or used engine is supplied and fitted when the original is beyond economic repair.
We do not quote figures until we know the vehicle and what has failed, so you get a clear quote for the job you actually need.

FAQ
Ford engine rebuild questions
Do you rebuild Ford engines in London?
Yes. Ford engines are rebuilt, repaired and replaced at our partner workshop in Rainham, East London, and at our partner workshop in Peterborough. We cover London, Peterborough and about 100 miles around.
Can you replace a 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt?
Yes. If the belt is replaced before it breaks down, the engine is usually fine. If debris has already starved the engine of oil, it may need a rebuild or a replacement engine, so the oil pick-up and oil pressure should be checked as part of the job.
Do you work on Transit vans?
Yes. We work on Transit, Transit Custom and Transit Connect engines, including the 2.2 TDCi and 2.0 EcoBlue diesels.
Is it worth rebuilding a Focus or Kuga engine?
Often, if the rest of the car is sound. We inspect first and tell you honestly whether a repair, rebuild or replacement engine makes sense for the car.
