Land Rover engine rebuild

Why rebuild a Land Rover engine?

A Land Rover is built to last, and when the engine fails the rest of the vehicle is usually still worth keeping. The body, gearbox, axles and interior are often in good order, so an engine rebuild or a replacement engine is normally far better value than selling the vehicle as a non-runner.

A rebuild keeps your original engine. We strip it, find out why it failed, replace the worn or damaged parts and put it back together. If the block or crankshaft is beyond saving, a reconditioned engine or a used engine may be the better route, and we explain the difference before any work starts.

Our specialist focus is Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar, with priority on 2015 and newer vehicles, so the engines on this page are the ones we see most.

Models

Land Rover models we work on

  • Defender (2020 on). 2.0 Ingenium diesel and petrol, and the 3.0 six-cylinder Ingenium in the D250 and D300. Earlier Defenders up to 2016 use the 2.2 and 2.4 diesels.
  • Discovery. The Discovery 3 has the 2.7 TDV6, the Discovery 4 the 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6, and the Discovery 5 the 2.0 Ingenium Sd4 and Td4 and the 3.0 V6 diesel.
  • Discovery Sport. 2.2 diesel on the earliest cars, then the 2.0 Ingenium diesel and petrol. This is one of the Land Rovers we see most.
  • Freelander 2. The 2.2 TD4 and SD4 diesels, which use a cam belt rather than a chain.

Not sure which engine you have? Send your registration and we will confirm the engine code for you.

Common engines

Land Rover engines and known problems

2.0 Ingenium diesel (204DTD and 204DTA)

Used in the Discovery Sport, Discovery 5, Defender and Range Rover Evoque. The best known fault is timing chain stretch. The chain sits at the gearbox end of the engine, so on many cars the engine has to come out to replace it. Short trips and repeated DPF regenerations can also thin the oil with fuel, which speeds up wear. Caught early, it is a timing chain replacement. Left until the chain jumps or snaps, it often means a rebuild.

3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 diesel (306DT)

Used in the Discovery 4 and Discovery 5 and many Range Rover models. This engine is known for crankshaft and main bearing failure, where a bearing spins or the crank breaks. Oil condition and service history play a big part. A knock from the bottom end or a low oil pressure warning means stop driving.

2.7 TDV6 diesel (276DT)

Used in the Discovery 3 and the first Range Rover Sport. It shares the crankshaft weak spot of the 3.0, so bottom-end knocks need checking quickly.

2.2 diesel (224DT)

Used in the Freelander 2 and the earliest Discovery Sport. It runs a cam belt, so a missed belt change can bend valves and damage pistons.

4.4 SDV8 diesel (448DT)

The twin-turbo 4.4 V8 diesel is fitted to Range Rover models rather than the Discovery or Defender. If your vehicle has one, see our Range Rover engine rebuild page.

Symptoms

Signs your Land Rover engine needs help

Most engine failures give a warning first. These are the signs Land Rover owners tell us about most often.

  • Knocking or rumbling from the bottom of the engine often a bearing problem. Stop driving and call us, because running it can turn a rebuild into a replacement.
  • Rattle on a cold start for a few seconds after starting is a classic sign of a stretched timing chain.
  • Oil pressure warning or low oil level check the level straight away and do not keep driving with the warning on.
  • Overheating or losing coolant with no obvious leak can point to a water pump, pipe or head gasket fault.
  • Heavy smoke, loss of power or limp mode can come from the turbo, injectors or internal wear. A fault code read and an inspection tell us which.
  • Oil level rising on the dipstick on a diesel usually means fuel is getting into the oil from repeated DPF regenerations.

If you are not sure, send the symptoms and any warning lights with your registration and we will tell you what we think is going on.

Rebuild, repair or replace

Choosing the right fix for your Land Rover

There are three routes, and an inspection tells us which one makes sense.

  • Engine repair. For faults that do not need the engine stripped, such as a turbo, injector, leak or cooling problem.
  • Engine rebuild. Your engine is stripped, inspected and rebuilt with worn or damaged parts replaced. A good choice when the block and crank can be saved.
  • Engine replacement. A reconditioned engine or used engine is supplied and fitted when the original is beyond economic repair.

We do not quote figures until we know the vehicle and what has failed, so you get a clear quote for the job you actually need.

FAQ

Land Rover engine rebuild questions

Do you rebuild Land Rover engines in London?

Yes. Land Rover engines are rebuilt at our partner workshop in Rainham, East London, and we also have a partner workshop in Peterborough. We cover London, Peterborough and about 100 miles around.

Do you rebuild Discovery Sport engines?

Yes. The Discovery Sport is one of the Land Rovers we see most, usually with the 2.0 Ingenium diesel.

Can the Ingenium timing chain problem be fixed?

Often, yes, if it is caught before the chain fails. Because the chain is at the gearbox end, the engine usually has to come out. If the chain has already failed, the engine may need a rebuild or replacement.

Why do 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines fail?

The best known problem is crankshaft and main bearing failure. Oil condition and service history play a big part, so a knock or low oil pressure warning should be checked straight away.

Do you work on the new Defender?

Yes. We work on the 2.0 and 3.0 Ingenium engines in the Defender from 2020, and on the diesels in earlier Defenders.

Is it worth rebuilding a Land Rover engine?

Usually, if the rest of the vehicle is sound. A rebuild or replacement engine is often far better value than selling a Land Rover as a non-runner. We inspect first and explain the options.

What warranty do I get?

You choose 6 months with unlimited miles, or 12 months or 12,000 miles.

Can I visit the workshop?

Yes. Customers can visit our Rainham partner workshop by arrangement.

What affects the cost of a Land Rover engine rebuild?

The engine code, the damage found during inspection and the parts needed all affect the quote. Send your registration and symptoms so Engine Rebuild can explain whether repair, rebuild or replacement is the sensible route.
