Range Rover engine rebuild
Why rebuild a Range Rover engine?
A Range Rover holds its value well, so when the engine fails a rebuild or replacement engine is usually far better value than writing the vehicle off. The body, interior, air suspension and gearbox are often in good order, and the engine is the only major part that needs attention.
An engine rebuild keeps your original engine. We strip it, find the cause of the failure and replace what is worn. If the block or crankshaft cannot be saved, a reconditioned engine or used engine, supplied and fitted, is the alternative.
Range Rover is part of our specialist focus, alongside Land Rover and Jaguar, with priority on 2015 and newer vehicles.

Models
Range Rover models we work on
- Range Rover, including Vogue and Autobiography. Mostly the 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 and the 4.4 SDV8 diesels, plus the 5.0 supercharged V8. Crankshaft failure on the 3.0 V6 is the job we are asked about most.
- Range Rover Sport. The widest engine choice, from the 2.0 Ingenium SD4 and the 2.7 and 3.0 V6 diesels to the 4.4 SDV8 and the 5.0 V8 in the SVR. A Range Rover Sport engine rebuild starts with checking the engine code and the cause of failure. If the original engine cannot be rebuilt, we explain the replacement options before work starts.
- Range Rover Velar. 2.0 Ingenium diesel and petrol, the 3.0 V6 diesel and the 3.0 supercharged V6.
- Range Rover Evoque. The 2.2 diesel on early cars, then the 2.0 Ingenium, where timing chain stretch is the main concern.
Send your registration and we will confirm exactly which engine your Range Rover has.

Common engines
Range Rover engines and known problems
3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 diesel (306DT)
Fitted to the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Velar. Crankshaft and main bearing failure is the best known fault: a bearing spins or the crank breaks, usually leaving the engine beyond simple repair. Turbo faults and oil and coolant leaks are also reported. A knock or low oil pressure warning means stop driving.
4.4 SDV8 diesel (448DT)
A heavy twin-turbo V8 in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. Turbo faults, oil and coolant leaks and wear from long periods of short trips are among the reported problems, and the tight engine bay makes most jobs involved.
2.0 Ingenium diesel and petrol
Fitted to the Evoque, Velar and Range Rover Sport. Timing chain stretch is the main concern, and because the chain is at the gearbox end the engine often has to come out. A cold-start rattle or timing fault code should be checked straight away, and caught early it is a timing chain replacement.
5.0 supercharged V8
Fitted to the Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport including the SVR, and the Velar SVAutobiography. Known for timing chain tensioner and guide wear on earlier engines, water pump failure and coolant pipe leaks.
2.2 diesel (224DT)
Fitted to the first Evoque. It uses a cam belt, so a missed belt change can lead to valve and piston damage.

Symptoms
Signs your Range Rover engine needs help
Most Range Rover engine failures give a warning first. Acting early is the best way to keep the job small.
- Knocking or rumbling from the bottom of the engine often a bearing problem. Stop driving and call us, because running it can turn a rebuild into a replacement.
- Rattle on a cold start for a few seconds after starting is a classic sign of a stretched timing chain.
- Oil pressure warning or low oil level check the level straight away and do not keep driving with the warning on.
- Overheating or losing coolant with no obvious leak can point to a water pump, pipe or head gasket fault.
- Heavy smoke, loss of power or limp mode can come from the turbo, injectors or internal wear. A fault code read and an inspection tell us which.
- Oil level rising on the dipstick on a diesel usually means fuel is getting into the oil from repeated DPF regenerations.
Send the symptoms and any warning lights with your registration and we will tell you what we think is going on.

Rebuild, repair or replace
Choosing the right fix for your Range Rover
The right answer depends on what has failed and how long you plan to keep the vehicle.
- Engine repair. For turbo, injector, leak and cooling faults that do not need the engine stripped.
- Engine rebuild. Your engine is stripped, inspected and rebuilt with worn or damaged parts replaced.
- Engine replacement. A reconditioned engine or used engine is supplied and fitted when the original cannot be saved, for example after a broken crankshaft.
We inspect first and do not quote figures until we know the vehicle, so the quote matches the job.
