Peugeot engine rebuild

Why rebuild a Peugeot engine?

When a Peugeot engine fails, the rest of the car is usually still worth keeping, especially on a newer 208, 3008 or 5008. The gearbox, body and interior are often in good order, so an engine rebuild or a replacement engine is normally better value than selling the car as a non-runner.

A rebuild keeps your original engine. We strip it, find out why it failed, replace the worn or damaged parts and put it back together. If the block or crankshaft is beyond saving, a reconditioned engine or a used engine may be the better route, and we explain the difference before any work starts.

Our specialist focus is Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar. We also rebuild, repair and replace Peugeot engines, with priority on 2015 and newer vehicles, and we are happy to look at older ones and every other make.

Common engines

Peugeot engines and known problems

1.2 PureTech petrol

Fitted to the 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008 and Rifter from about 2013. It is a three-cylinder engine with a timing belt that runs in oil, known as a wet belt. Over time the belt can break down, and pieces of it can block the oil pick-up and starve the engine of oil. High oil use is also reported on some engines. A low oil pressure warning, an oil level that keeps dropping or a rough-running engine should be checked straight away. Caught early, it is a timing chain or wet belt replacement.

1.6 HDi and BlueHDi diesel

Used in many Peugeot cars and vans. Known problems include leaking injector seals, which let carbon build up around the injectors, and turbo failures linked to the oil supply, so the oil feed should be checked whenever a turbo is replaced. The timing belt also needs changing on time.

1.5 BlueHDi diesel

The newer four-cylinder diesel, from about 2017 in the 208, 308, 3008, 5008 and Partner. AdBlue system faults are widely reported on BlueHDi engines, and a warning that the engine will not restart after a set number of miles should not be ignored. For other faults, send the registration and the symptoms.

2.0 BlueHDi and 2.2 diesel

The 2.0 BlueHDi is fitted to the 3008, 5008, 508 and Expert, and the Boxer uses 2.0 and 2.2 diesels. DPF, EGR, AdBlue and injector faults are worth checking, especially on vans that do a lot of short trips.

Symptoms

Signs your Peugeot engine needs help

Most engine failures give a warning first. These are the signs Peugeot owners tell us about most often.

  • Knocking or rumbling from the bottom of the engine often a bearing problem. Stop driving and call us, because running it can turn a rebuild into a replacement.
  • Low oil pressure warning or a dropping oil level on a 1.2 PureTech is a classic sign of a wet belt problem or high oil use. Stop driving and have it checked.
  • Ticking or a smell of exhaust fumes from the engine bay can point to a leaking injector seal on an HDi diesel.
  • Overheating or losing coolant with no obvious leak can point to a water pump, pipe or head gasket fault.
  • An AdBlue warning with a mileage countdown on a BlueHDi needs attention before it reaches zero, because the engine may not restart.
  • Heavy smoke, loss of power or limp mode can come from the turbo, injectors, DPF, EGR or internal wear. A fault code read and an inspection tell us which.

If you are not sure, send the symptoms and any warning lights with your registration and we will tell you what we think is going on.

Rebuild, repair or replace

Choosing the right fix for your Peugeot

There are three routes, and an inspection tells us which one makes sense.

  • Engine repair. For faults that do not need the engine stripped, such as a leak, turbo, injector or cooling problem.
  • Engine Rebuild. Your engine is stripped, inspected and rebuilt with worn or damaged parts replaced. A good choice when the block and crank can be saved.
  • Engine replacement. A reconditioned engine or used engine is supplied and fitted when the original is beyond economic repair.

We do not quote figures until we know the vehicle and what has failed, so you get a clear quote for the job you actually need.
